  • 1988 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BASEBALL TEAM: This State Championship was the 2nd in school history. Led by Former Coach and Athletic Director David Vaughn (2010 HOF Inductee) to an undefeated 26-0 season defeating Asheville Erwin HS. The ’88 Team also won the Mid-State 3A Conference Championship. THE TEAM MEMBERS ARE ANITRA DAWN DODSON, CRISSY DAWN HERRING, DOROTHY LYNNE KNIGHTEN, FRANCES MARIE WOODY, HEATHER LOUSISE DEAN, HONDA OCTAVIA GWYNN, JACQUELYN TENNILLE ROBERTSON, JENNY LYNN COBLE, JULIE GRIFFIN McVEY, KASEY LYNETTE GRIFFIN, KIMBERLY DAWN SHOFFNER, MELINDA ARLENE LUTTERLOH, MISTY LYNN ROBBINS, NIKKI SUZANNE PRITCHETT, REGINA ANN HERRING, ROBIN LYNN ISLEY, SHERRY ELIZABETH BRIGGS, STEPHANIE RENEE OAKES & TRACEY LYNN NORRIS. JAMES’ SENIOR YEAR HE WAS A STANDOUT FOOTBALL PLAYER IN WHICH HE SERVED AS THE 1975 FOOTBALL TEAM’S CAPTAIN. JAMES WAS ALSO SELECTED TO THE ALL-CONFERENCE & ALL-CITY/COUNTY TEAMS HIS JUNIOR & SENIOR SEASONS. JAMES ALSO GARNERED LINEMAN OF THE YEAR IN THE CONFERENCE, HONORABLE MENTIION ALL-STATE MEMBER & STARTED ON THE 1976 NORTH/SOUTH ALL-STAR FOOTBALL TEAM. POST HIGH-SCHOOL, JAMES EARNED A SCHOLARSHIP TO PLAY COLLEGIATE FOOTBALL FOR GUILFORD COLLEGE. JAMES WAS A 3 YEAR STARTER AT GUILFORD COLLEGE. JAMES EARNED THE GOLDEN HELMET AWARD HIS SENIOR YEAR WHICH WAS GIVEN TO THE MOST OUTSTANDING FOOTBALL PLAYER FROM THAT YEARS TEAM. JAMES ALSO WAS THE RECIPIENT OF THE NEREUS C. ENGLISH AWARD WHICH WAS GIVEN IN HONOR OF EDUCATION THROUGH THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT. AFTER COLLEGE, JAMES ENJOYED A LENGTHY CAREER IN COACHING, EDUCATION & ADMINISTRATION SPANDING FROM 1980-2009. JAMES IS RETIRED NOW AND LIVES IN THE RALEIGH AREA WITH HIS WIFE.
  • ROBERT MARK ISLEY: MARK IS A 1982 SH GRADUATE. MARK IS BEING INDUCTED INTO THE HALL OF FAME AS A DISTINGUSISHED GRADUATE. MARK HAD AN EXTENSIVE CAREER IN EDUCATION AND ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION. MARK PLAYED FOOTBALL AT SH AND SERVED AS A VARSITY BASKETBALL MANAGER FROM 1979-1982. AFTER GRADUATION FROM SH, MARK ATTENDED AND GRADUATED FROM UNC-CHAPEL HILL. MARK GRADUATED FROM UNC IN 1986. THROUGH HIS CAREER AT UNC MARK SERVED AS THE VARSITY BASKETBALL MANAGER, ATHLETIC OPERATION, AND CURRENTLY HOLDS THE OFFICIAL SCOREKEEPER POSITION (UNC BASKETBALL). HE ALSO SERVES AS THE ACC OFFICIAL SCOREKEEPER FOR THE ACC TOURNAMENT WHEN HOSTED IN GREENSBORO. MARK ALSO SERVED AS THE MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETIC DIRECTOR FROM 2005-2015 & HEAD FOOTBALL COACH FOR 22 SEASONS WHERE HE WON 2 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS. MARK IS CURRENTLY IN HIS 30 YEAR OF EDUCATON, ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION AND COACHING AT SOUTHERN MIDDLE.
  • PETER ALAN MARTIN:  PETE IS A 1978 GRADUATE OF CUMMINGS HS. PETE IS BEING INDUCTED INTO THE HALL OF FAME AS A COACH/OUTSTANDING ATHLETIC CONTRIBUTOR. AFTER GRAUDATION FROM CUMMINGS, PETE ATTENDED AND GRADUATED FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF NC STATE WITH A BS IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION. PETE THEN MADE HIS WAY TO SH LANDING A POSITION IN THE MATH DEPARTMENT AND BECAME A STAPLE AT SHS EDUCATIONALLY AND ATHLETICALLY. PETE IS ALSO NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFIED. PETE HELD THIS POSITION FOR 34 LONG YEARS. ALONG WITH TEACHING MATH, PETE COACHED 1 YEAR OF FOOTBALL IN 1982, 1 YEAR OF GIRLS GOLF AND 30 YEARS IN THE WRESTLING PROGRAM. 13 OF THOSE YEARS SPENT AS THE HEAD COACH AND 17 AS THE HEAD ASSISTANT.  PETE, ALSO CURRENTLY SERVES AS THE CHAIR OF THE SA ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME COMMITTEE. PETE HAS GIVEN A LIFE TIME OF SERVICE THAT WAS FILLED WITH HARD-WORK AND PASSION TO THE SOUTHERN COMMUNITY AND HIS SCHOOL. PETE RETIRED AFTER LAST YEAR AND IS NOW TEACHING MATH AT THE BURLINGTON SCHOOL IN BURLINGTON NC AND WILL BE BACK THIS YEAR FOR HIS 31ST SEASON WITH SH WRESTLING. CURRENTLY, PETE RESIDES IN THE SOUTHERN COMMUNITY AND ENJOYS TIME WITH HIS 2 CHILDREN JOSH AND ASHLEIGH AND HIS 3 GRANDCHIDLREN: KAYLEIGH, LEVI & KENSLEY.
  • JOSHUA SHEA RUDDER:  JOSH IS A 2004 SH GRADUATE. JOSH IS BEING INDUCTED INTO THE SH ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME AS AN OUT-STANDING ATHLETE. JOSH BROKE THE ALL-TIME LEADING SCORING TITLE HIS SENIOR YEAR AT SH; WHICH WAS A RECORD THAT STOOD FOR MANY SEASONS UNTIL HE BROKE IT. JOSH’S SENIOR SEASON HE WAS THE UNAMIMOUS SELECTION AS CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE YEAR. HE ALSO TALLIED 3 STRAIGHT SEASONS AS A 1ST TEAM ALL-CONFERENCE STANDOUT. JOSH WAS ALSO NAMED TO THE NEWS TIMES ALL-REGION TEAM FOR 3 STRAIGHT SEASONS. AFTER HIGHSCHOOL JOSH RECEIVED A SCHOLARSHIP TO ATTEND LENIOR RHYNE UNIVERSITY TO PLAY BASKETBALL. JOSH’S FRESHMEN YEAR HE EARNED ALL FRESHMAN TEAM HONORS AND ALL TOURNAMENT TEAM HONORS. JOSH’S SOPHMORE, JUNIOR & SENIOR SEAONS HE WAS SELECTED TO THE ALL CONFERENCE TEAM AND LED HIS TEAMS TO 3 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS. JOSH ENDED HIS CAREER AT LRU AS THE 12TH LEADING SCORER IN SCHOOL HISTORY, 2ND IN STEALS & 3RD IN ASSISTS (WHO KNEW HE PASSED THE BALL THAT MUCH). AFTER HIS SENIOR SEASON AT LRU HE TRAVELED OVER SEAS TO PLAY PORFESSIONAL BALL. HE PLAYED ONE SEASON FOR BG LEITERSHOFEN IN AUGSBURG, GERMANY WHERE HE AVEREAGED 22 POINTS A GAME – 8 ASSISTS A GAME AND LED HIS TEAM TO A 24-2 RECORD AND THE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP. JOSH GARNERED THE PLAYER OF THE YEAR IN THE LEAGUE IN HIS ONLY SEASON OVER SEAS FOR THIS ORGANIZATION. LIFE AFTER BASKETBALL FOR JOSH HAS INCLUDED COACHING HIGHSCHOOL BASKETBALL, MISSION TRIPS AND LANDING A JOB WHERE HE NOW RESIDES IN CALFORNIA.
  • CHRIS JEROME SMITH: CHRIS IS BEING INDUCTED INTO THE SH ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME AS A COACH/ADMINISTRATOR. CHRIS HAD A LONG CAREER IN COACHING, EDUCATION AND ADMINSTRATION. CHRIS GRADUATED FROM NEW HANOVER HS IN 1977. CHRIS WOULD GO ON TO GRADUATE FROM NC CENTRAL. CHRIS WOULD PLAY FOOTBALL & WRESTLE FOR NC CENTRAL. CHRIS GRADUATED FROM NC CENTRAL IN 1981 WITH A PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEGREE AND WOULD LATER GO TO EARN HIS ADMINISTRATION DEGREE. CHRIS WAS AN ADMINISTRATOR AND COACH FOR SOUTHERN HIGH FROM 1984-2000. HE WOULD HELP COACH FOOTBALL, TRACK AND WRESTLING. HE COACHED SEVERAL STATE CHAMPIONS IN TRACK AND WRESTLING. IN HIS TIME HERE AT SOUTHERN; HE WOULD HELP LED THOSE 3 SPORTS TO 9 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS AND 33 STATE QUALIFIERS IN WRESTLING. CHRIS WOULD GO ON TO SERVE AS AN ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL & WRESTLING COACH AT EAST CHAPEL HILL HS FOR MANY YEARS AFTER HIS COACHING CAREER AT SH. CHRIS PASSED IN 2014 SUDDENLY. HE TOUCHED A LOT OF STUDENTS, COLLEGUES, PLAYERS AND FRIENDS LIVES OVER THE YEARS WITH HIS PASSION AND WILLINESS TO HELP OTHERS. HE WILL BE SORELY MISSED.
  • MICAHEL WAYNE WILLIAMS:  MIKE IS A 1979 SH GRADUATE. MIKE WILL GO INTO THE SH ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME AS A DISTINGUISHED GRADUATE. MIKE HAS AN EXTENSIVE RESUME THAT FOLLOWS HIM EVEN UNTIL TODAY. MIKE PLAYED 4 YEARS OF BASKETBALL AND BASEBALL FOR SH. MIKE WAS NAMED MVP HIS SENIOR YEAR IN BASEBALL FOR THE CONFERENCE. MIKE WOULD ATTEND AND GRADUATE FROM ELON UNIVERSITY AFTER HS IN THE CLASS OF 1983. MIKE DID HIS STUDENT-TEACHING AT CUMMINGS HS. THEN LANDED HIS FIRST COACHING JOB AT SH AS AN ASSISTANT FOR LEGENDARY COACH TOMMY SPOON, AND HELP LED THE LADY PATRIOT SOFTBALL TEAM TO 2 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THE 81’ & 84’ SEASONS. MIKE HAS BEEN INDUCTED INTO THE SA HOF AS AN ASSISTANT COACH WITH BOTH TEAMS. MIKE HAS BEEN A PE TEACHER AT GRAHAM HS FOR 30 YEARS, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR FOR 22 YEARS, HEAD SOFTBALL COACH FOR 30 YEARS, BASKETBALL COACH FOR 27 YEARS AND HAS BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR OVER 800 CAREER COACHING VICTORIES. MIKE HAS LED THE SOFTBALL PROGRAM TO OVER 400 VICTORIES WHICH IS 4TH AMONG ACTIVE COACHES IN THE STATE OF NC. MIKE HAS ALSO BEEN SELECTED AS AN ASSISTANT COACH FOR THE EAST/WEST ALL-STAR GAME IN 2015. MIKE CURRENTLY HOLDS EACH OF THE POSITIONS NAMED ABOVE AND STILL IS GOING STRONG. MIKE IS MARRIED TO HIS WIFE PATTY AND THEY HAVE 3 DAUGHTERS SHEA, BRITT & MACY AND HAVE 1 GRANDSON, QUADE.

HE PLAYED ONE SEASON FOR BG LEITERSHOFEN IN AUGSBURG, GERMANY WHERE HE AVEREAGED 22 POINTS A GAME – 8 ASSISTS A GAME AND LED HIS TEAM TO A 24-2 RECORD AND THE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP. JOSH GARNERED THE PLAYER OF THE YEAR IN THE LEAGUE IN HIS ONLY SEASON OVER SEAS FOR THIS ORGANIZATION. LIFE AFTER BASKETBALL FOR JOSH HAS INCLUDED COACHING HIGHSCHOOL BASKETBALL, MISSION TRIPS AND LANDING A JOB WHERE HE NOW RESIDES IN CALFORNIA.
  • CHRIS JEROME SMITH: CHRIS IS BEING INDUCTED INTO THE SH ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME AS A COACH/ADMINISTRATOR. CHRIS HAD A LONG CAREER IN COACHING, EDUCATION AND ADMINSTRATION. CHRIS GRADUATED FROM NEW HANOVER HS IN 1977. CHRIS WOULD GO ON TO GRADUATE FROM NC CENTRAL. CHRIS WOULD PLAY FOOTBALL & WRESTLE FOR NC CENTRAL. CHRIS GRADUATED FROM NC CENTRAL IN 1981 WITH A PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEGREE AND WOULD LATER GO TO EARN HIS ADMINISTRATION DEGREE. CHRIS WAS AN ADMINISTRATOR AND COACH FOR SOUTHERN HIGH FROM 1984-2000. HE WOULD HELP COACH FOOTBALL, TRACK AND WRESTLING. HE COACHED SEVERAL STATE CHAMPIONS IN TRACK AND WRESTLING. IN HIS TIME HERE AT SOUTHERN; HE WOULD HELP LED THOSE 3 SPORTS TO 9 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS AND 33 STATE QUALIFIERS IN WRESTLING. CHRIS WOULD GO ON TO SERVE AS AN ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL & WRESTLING COACH AT EAST CHAPEL HILL HS FOR MANY YEARS AFTER HIS COACHING CAREER AT SH. CHRIS PASSED IN 2014 SUDDENLY. HE TOUCHED A LOT OF STUDENTS, COLLEGUES, PLAYERS AND FRIENDS LIVES OVER THE YEARS WITH HIS PASSION AND WILLINESS TO HELP OTHERS. HE WILL BE SORELY MISSED.
  • MICAHEL WAYNE WILLIAMS:  MIKE IS A 1979 SH GRADUATE. MIKE WILL GO INTO THE SH ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME AS A DISTINGUISHED GRADUATE. MIKE HAS AN EXTENSIVE RESUME THAT FOLLOWS HIM EVEN UNTIL TODAY. MIKE PLAYED 4 YEARS OF BASKETBALL AND BASEBALL FOR SH. MIKE WAS NAMED MVP HIS SENIOR YEAR IN BASEBALL FOR THE CONFERENCE. MIKE WOULD ATTEND AND GRADUATE FROM ELON UNIVERSITY AFTER HS IN THE CLASS OF 1983. MIKE DID HIS STUDENT-TEACHING AT CUMMINGS HS. THEN LANDED HIS FIRST COACHING JOB AT SH AS AN ASSISTANT FOR LEGENDARY COACH TOMMY SPOON, AND HELP LED THE LADY PATRIOT SOFTBALL TEAM TO 2 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THE 81’ & 84’ SEASONS. MIKE HAS BEEN INDUCTED INTO THE SA HOF AS AN ASSISTANT COACH WITH BOTH TEAMS. MIKE HAS BEEN A PE TEACHER AT GRAHAM HS FOR 30 YEARS, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR FOR 22 YEARS, HEAD SOFTBALL COACH FOR 30 YEARS, BASKETBALL COACH FOR 27 YEARS AND HAS BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR OVER 800 CAREER COACHING VICTORIES. MIKE HAS LED THE SOFTBALL PROGRAM TO OVER 400 VICTORIES WHICH IS 4TH AMONG ACTIVE COACHES IN THE STATE OF NC. MIKE HAS ALSO BEEN SELECTED AS AN ASSISTANT COACH FOR THE EAST/WEST ALL-STAR GAME IN 2015. MIKE CURRENTLY HOLDS EACH OF THE POSITIONS NAMED ABOVE AND STILL IS GOING STRONG. MIKE IS MARRIED TO HIS WIFE PATTY AND THEY HAVE 3 DAUGHTERS SHEA, BRITT & MACY AND HAVE 1 GRANDSON, QUADE.
