8th SAHS HOF CLASS of 2017



INDUCTEE: DR. JAMES H. HAWKINS SR.:    Doctor Hawkins Sr. is being inducted into the SH HOF as a Key Contributor. Dr. Hawkins Sr. was born and raised in Marion, NC. Doctor Hawkins Sr. later graduated from UNC of Chapel Hill will also earning his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Medicine. He also went on to hold his internship in the US Navy post WW II. He finally settled and made Graham, NC his home where he joined the General Medical Practice; while also starting to help with the local Football teams in the area. Dr. Hawkins Sr. provided care for Graham HS, Old E.M. Holt High and then in 1960 became Southern’s official football team doctor. He would attend most Friday Night Football games but also offered pre-participation physicals to the local teams. Dr. Hawkins Sr. was on Southern’s sidelines for 20 seasons giving his time and efforts to the football program! In 2000 Dr. Hawkins Sr. passed surrounded by family & loved ones and remembered by thousands of former patients throughout the county he loved and served. Dr. Hawkins and his wife Jane raised 6 wonderful children. Dr. Hawkins Sr. and the Hawkins Family we at Southern want to say thank you for the sacrifices that your father and your family had to make so he could afford us with the level of care he did for so many years!




INDUCTEE: DR. JAMES H. HAWKINS JR.:  Doctor Hawkins Jr. is being inducted into the SH HOF as a Key Contributor. Dr. Hawkins Jr. is a 1967 Southern High Grad. He lettered in Basketball and Tennis while being a part of Southern Athletics. Post High School graduation he attended and graduated from Davidson College in 1971 and received his Medical Degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. After completing a 3 year Family Practice Residency at The Medical Center in Columbus, Georgia, he returned to Alamance County to begin practicing medicine. Once Dr. Hawkins Jr. arrived back in the county he immediately involved in athletics at Southern. Starting in August of 1981 he was on the sideline for Southern Football until 2016. Ironically, 1981 was his father’s last year on the sideline as the Team Doctor. So it was a natural fit to say the least for everyone! For 36 seasons Dr. Hawkins Jr. roamed the sidelines here on Friday night providing care for his athletes. Again, this was remarkable run of selfless service – between Dr. Hawkins Sr. and Jr. they had combined 56 seasons on Southern Football’s sidelines. We cannot begin to thank you enough for the hours and hours you and your father gave us. Again, Dr. Hawkins Jr. and the Hawkins Family we would simply like to say thank you for all you have provided us over the past 56 years! It will not go unnoticed!




INDUCTEE: COACH JAMES MATANZO: Coach James Matanzo is being inducted as a Coach into the SH HOF Class of 2017. Coach Matanzo was the Southern High School’s baseball coach for 14 years. Coach Matanzo graduated from Elon University in 1978 with a BS in Education and then later attended UNC Chapel Hill earning his Maters of School Administration degree. Coach Matanzo earned several coaches of the year honors in his tenure has the Head Baseball Coach here at Southern. After retiring from Education, he went back to the coaching ranks helping develop young talent at Southern Middle School for many seasons – some of those players would eventually play for Southern’s program. Coach Mantanzo has had his touch on Southern baseball for many years.  We are very thankful for the time and effort he gave to help build this program here at Southern. Coach Matanzo now resides in Gibsonville, NC and has been married to his long life partner Martha for 34 short years!




INDUCTEE: ANITRA DAWN DODSON:   Anitra is a 1992 Southern Grad. Anitra will be going into 2017 SH HOF as an Outstanding Athlete. Anitra was a 4 sport athlete here at Southern in our tenure. While at Southern she was an All-Conference performer in Volleyball, Basketball, Softball & Track. She broke and held the 800 meter run and won the Track Runner of the Year as a sophomore. She was named Player of the Year in Volleyball her junior year and Won the 1992 State Championship as a member of the Softball team our senior season. To wrap up her amazing HS career, Anitra garnered the LM Adcock award which is still given today, to the best all-around athlete. Post-High School, Anitra would go on to attend High Point University to play Volleyball on a partial athletic scholarship. She was a 3 year starter for HP University. She garnered All-Conference team in our sophomore year.  After Anitra’s playing days earned her BA in Special Education and would go on to teach at SH for 14 years and Coached JV and V Volleyball for 6 seasons. She was named “Educator of Excellence” in 2016 by the North Carolina Conference for Exceptional Children. These days Anitra enjoys the company of our Children: Sons, Hogan and Kanyon and Daughter Noelle which is currently a senior at SHS.
